Default Need help with XC70 rear axle

The rear axle on my '03 xc70 has me stumped. While trying to remove the brake disk on the left rear so that I could work on a problem with the parking brake, I removed the axle bolt. I realize now that this was not necessary and it was a mistake. I now trying to re-assemble everything. The problem is the end of the axle has moved in towards the center of the car about 5/8 on an inch and I can't pull it out. I'm trying to get the end of the axle nearly flush with the outer surface of the hub. I've checked that the cv joint is in good contact with the back of the hub. I can easily push the axle further in towards the center of the car with my finger and I can reach around and push the cv joint back toward the hub and hear a clunk when the cv joint hits the hub. It's as if the axle is too short. Is something wrong inside the cv joint? Can anyone tell me what's going on here and how to get it right?
