Hello!! I'm new to the whole Volvo thing. My brother has a 2000 XC 70 with the 2.4 Turbo and he is needing to replace the radiator.

I am not necessarily mechanically inclined but over the past 4 or 5 years have been learning to work on vehicles through our Jeeps / Jeep forums , etc.

We are going to tackle the radiator but what freaked me out is that his mechanic said this job bills at a 6 hour job . . . holy cow, 6 hours for a trained mechanic to change a radiator . . this could take us days, lol.

I looked through the threads and performed a search but could not find information about this job and how complicated it may be.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

have to be on hoist to make it easier..The rad comesout from the bottom. remove the front bumper splash shield (the one that always fall off when park too close to the curb) first then drain coolant on the bottom left of rad there isa drain (13mm deepsocketwill open it).. Remove upper and lower rad hoses. Remove the rad fan (2-4 screws up top), remove the intake tube.. Depends on model yr of vehicle may have to remove intercooler hose. there is a way to cheat and not having to recover refrigerant from A/C (shop manual recommend recover and recharge refrigerant)... there are around 6-8 screws to remove from under the car that bolt to rad support and to seperated from condenser and intercooler... once all loose tilt intercooler and rad out from driver side (BE extremely careful and not putting too much strain to the a/c lines when all tilted out ).it will be a 2 people job when re-assemble back together since 1 person will be supporting the rad,intercooler and the condenser and other person will tighten up all screw and threading it in by hand. (ONE LAST THING TRANSFER PARTS OR HANGERS NEEDED FROM OLD RAD TO NEW) installation is reverse.hope that helps.

 

Thanks, that's a big help!! I don't have a lift but we should be able to get it in the air enough with two sets of ramps.

Any links or help on cheating to not have to recharge the refrigerant?

 

I always leave the condensor in the car without removing the freon.
Remove the 4 side screws before removing the 2 12's.
Then I run a wire tie through the body and around the lines at the conensor and that holds it fine while dropping the radiator.
