Default Surging on low power demand

I bought a 2001 about a month ago. We have been very happy with car so far.

I looked though the FAQ and searched a bit but didn't find a clear answer.

One issue that we have been having with the car is during times of low power demand (I.e. During very low power demand to coast to very low engine breaking) the car surges. I can best describe it as the car being inane to find a suitable throttle position, and continually over correcting with a cycle time of about one second. My girlfriend said that today it was idleing a bit rough, like it had bad gas.

While I would like to get this dealt with, I'm supposed to take the car for a 600 mile trip this weekend and need to find another option if I should not take the car.

Also I'm wondering if it is inadviseable to use the manual mode of the tranny as it causes premature tranny failure. Would be nice if this was added to
the FAQ.
