I've called the local Volve dealer to get a quote on installing a trailer hitch and was told that the trailer hitch for '07 XC70 will not fit on later year XC70s.

Although my family does not have immediate plan to upgrade our car, we can definitely see that happen in the next 2 to 3 years.

So, are there generic, aftermarket trailer hitches that can be used both on my '07 XC70 and on more recent XC70s?

 

Don't bother with a "generic" if they make one. Newer cars do not have bumpers you can attach a hitch to. Dealer is right, gen 3 XC's are based on S80 Chassis, not same as gen 2 01-07 XC's.

If you have a competent garage have them install a custom hitch made for the car.

Try Draw-tite's web site, they make a nice hitch. Their hitches are as good as Volvo's.

While we're at it, what kind of rear end support/lift have folks done to keep the assend up while hauling a load? Mine dropped lower than expected the other day.
Draw-tite is the way to go, it FITS!
