Default Tranny indicator on dash/stuck in 3rd gear

We have a 2002 XC 70 with 105,000 miles. We stopped for gas yesterday and when I went to turn the car back on we went to drive away and the tranny was stuck in 3rd gear. I couldn't shift it manually either. Also, the light for the tranny indicator did not work. The indicator on the dash said it was still in park even though we were driving. We limped home and I pulled a couple of fuses which checked clear. When I went to restart the car it was fine. It shifts well and drives normally again but now we have a check engine light on. We just did the major 105,000 service but now I am worried that the tranny is going on it. Any hints on what I can expect when getting it diagnosed? We had the tranny fluid flushed about 20,000 miles ago and had the software update done as well. It has run very well. I am hoping for something simple? If this thing needs a tranny I am going to flip out !!!!

Might be a $3500 repair is on it's way. Since the CEL is on bring it to the dealer and have the code scanned and let them give you the bad news (if it really is a bad trans). Sorry to hear and I know your pain. Most likely the car went into limp mode and will not shift out of third gear due to some sludge getting into something it should not have. Seems this is a rather common problem with the XC70 1998-2004?? Five speed transmissions are worse then the four speed.
