Default whining passenger wheel noise

Hey everyone,
I drive a 1999 xc70 and love this ride. It has 140,000 miles on it and runs very well. I have been hearing a noise from the right side (passenger) wheel region as I drive. It has been getting louder as I put more miles on the car. During the past 2 weeks, due to rain, I have been driving it more. I am thinking it may be a wheel bearing that is in need of replacement. Is this any easy task? I know I can get the part(s) from several sources, including ipd and a local jobber as well. How is this task accomplished?

Fleece be with you!

If you can swap a front axle you can do the bearing.

Default special tools?

Thanks,
Do I need any special tools to take the hub from the car? Will I need a hub puller or CV shaft remover tool? I have to take the 36 mm nut off and then the 4 bolts from the back, right? And then what?

Thanks again,
Goody

You will have to remove the caliper and rotor. Then remove the balljoint from the hub and slide the axle out. Sometimes it will slide out other times you will need a tool to press it out. Then you can remove the screws holding the hub in. I think the socket you need for the hub bolts is a E6 inverted torxes.

OK so far. Will I need to use a special tool for the ball joint? I can do the rotors/calipers with my eyes closed. I haven't ever taken the ball joint off. Will I use a pickle fork or just tap it out?
This has been very helpful thus far and I am appreciative.

No special tools needed for that. The bolt that goes though the hub is a 13mm on the bolt and 15mm on the nut.
Once the bolt is out push/pull down on the control arm to get it out of the hub.
Sometimes it can be a PITA to get it out. But you have to work it over and get it out.
Also if it looks rusty WD-40,PB Blaster is your friend.
