Default Wont start!

I own a 2001 XC70 and have had a few problems with this car, but the most recent and most frustrating is the car not starting! It turns and turns but never fires. This has happened now 3 times. The first time it happened, no messages were displayed. I towed it home and it started the next morning, burning RICH fumes! I drove it to the mechanic and they couldn't find anything wrong. The second time it happened, we waited until the next morning and it started, again burning rich fumes. My husband said it might need fuel injection cleaner, so I bought some and used it next time I filled up w/ gas. Well, It happeded again a few days ago, and has YET TO START! I tried starting it several times each day and on about the 3rd try, "Immobilizer" message appeared. I removed my keyless entry remote and tried again, but no luck. I am towing it to the mechanic on Monday, if it doesn't start again by then. In that case, I will drive it there. However, I would like them to look at it in the state it's in!! Has this happened to anyone else, and what did you find?

Frustrated,
Sallymac

Has the mechanic use a scantool to see if there are any store codes in the vehicle's computer?
Is you mechanic a Volvo tech? If not, I recommend you to bring it to a experience volvo technician since they are specialized in Volvos.
Fuel Injection cleaner of coz wont help with any rich conditions.

join volvoxc.com for technical info. by the way, have your ETM (electronic throttle module) failed on you?

Have you tried using one of your other keys to start it when it didn't start?

2001 xc's are notorious for having problems with ECM's (Electronic Control Modules) If your xc has over 50000 mile on it, one of the 1st things I would have dealer check for is proper ECM operation. Volvo has announced that they have extended the warranty on ECM's to 10 years/200,000 miles. If you go to the Volvo xc site you can download all sorts of Tech info on the ECM problem. Sooner or later, ALL Volvos with the Fiat made ECM are going to experience failure of this component. "Tech" who moderates this site probably has more info than I. BJ

Just to correct you so we are all straight. It is not the ECM that goes bad it is the ETM (Electronic throttle body)
It is quite confusing to remember them all.
