Default XC70 2004 Brake Lights - Moisture problem

Hi, My brake lights on the sides (not the top bar) are out generally, but come on periodically during any particular drive. They are more likely to work on dry days or after the car has been going awhile. The local mechanic doesn't want tackle it (not a good sign I'm sure) and the volvo guy is trying to retire so I'm hoping to solve it myself. Any advice? Where should I start?

Thanks!

Melted connections between the bulb holder and the taillamp assembly are common. If you have tried to replace the bulbs - you have found out it's very difficult to get your hand in holding/manipulating the bulb holder - A rule I use is once you get the bulb holder out - do not put it down, keep holding it in the same position until it's put back in place. If you set it down it's difficult to figure out how it fits.

Sometimes the only permanent solution is a new taillamp assembly.

Other failure points could be the brake light relay or the shunt in the REM. (for your 2004. 2005 + does not have a relay)
