Question XC70 Angle Bevel Gear Issues - do we still have them?

Hi Everyone. I owned a 2005 XC70 and like many, the angle gear splines wore down and I lost rear wheel transmission. It cost me a fortune to get it fixed.. not long after the angle gear casing started to leak and I ended up selling the car. It was simply way too expensive to maintain in New Zealand. My mechanic told me this was also very common with the XC90.

So.. I was wondering.. How do the later model XC70's compare when it comes to angle bevel gear design? I would love another XC70 - without the trouble. Do the 2008-2011 models suffer from the same thing?

bevel or angle gears just refer to the AWD's transfer case that has the job of converting an east west power shaft into a north-south drive shaft to power the rear differential. So yes the car has a transfer case and yes the newer models are substantially more reliable. Much of the original issue was the supplier (ie Volvo like many car companies by transmissions, transfer cases etc from common vendors like Aisin, Getrag, Borg Warner who sell to all the manfacturers. I could be wrong on the names, but i believe the angle gears were from Borg who volvo replaced as a supplier in the mid 00s.

Thanks. I really hope so. My mechanic showed me the driveshaft/sleeve that went into the transfer casing. The splines were practically non-existent.
