'06 XC90 A/C Problem

Hello, everyone. A question... my parents have the subject vehicle and took it to a Volvo repair shop (not a dealership) as their A/C wasn't coming out cold. They apparently told them that they need to replace BOTH the A/C condenser and compressor. With only 53,000 miles on the odometer, this sounds very, very unrealistic to say the least. Since my parents don't know much about cars, they called me to ask what they should do.
My best guess is that their refrigerant level is low and they need to get recharged. I called a Volvo dealer (Power Volvo in Irvine, CA... they're very friendly and nice in answering questions over the phone, BTW) and the service advisor said he has seen some XC90s come in with a leaking condenser but can't remember the last time a compressor was replaced. So perhaps there is a chance that the condenser is leaking, but not sure.
Any other XC90 owners experience a similar problem at this mileage level? If you had a failure of both parts, how much did you cost you to replace? Some helpful advice / insight would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
