Default 2004 engine failure

I have a situation where my 2004 xc90 2.5 has had a bearing failure on the #2 cyl. I had a slight engine shudder when travelling at highway speed, and then having to back off slightly when coming up on a slower vehicle. When I'd go back on the throttle I would get a shudder almost like and aBS pulse, that would last for 5 - 10 seconds. And it could not be repeated. The dealer was made aware of this and could not find anything on the scope. I was told to wait and if it got worse then perhaps it'd show up.

We purchased the vehicle at 93,000km...and the CPO inspection was completed by the dealership. The shudder would appear from time to time, as it only showed up at highway speed, on grade and when backing off and coming back on the accelerator.

In Nov. my wife was in an accident, where she was struck from a vehicle going the same direction who swerved into her to avoid an accident. Most of the damage was fender, fascia, broken wheel, etc. all on the drivers side. Not a huge impact but still rough $5K damage.

Immediately after that I had the vehicle on the highway and the shudder was more predominant. I scheduled a service appointment, and the dealership indicated that there were many fault codes that showed up. At this time all I had seen was a reduced engine performance light come on. Which prompted the service call. The dealership thought it might be plugs, and perhaps the coil. But suggest plugs only and then monitor what this did to the situation.

On my way home from the dealership, the check engine light came on, as well as a flash of the oil light. With the Reduced engine performance ( I didn't need to be told) light coming on. I did not drive it, for the next week or so, as I could not get it in the shop, and then took it to the dealer ship. I left it with them for some time, and when they checked it, again nothing on the scope, however they could hear the engine nosie which was a clatter under load. Almost sounding like valve noise or the timing being off.

The dealership suggested to me that perhaps there was damage caused by the accident the month earlier and to contact my insurance to let them know that there may be more damage. The insurance co. wanted confirmation, so Volvo, pulled the oilpan to investigate. "the bearing on the #2 cyclinder had spun, and caused damage to the crank. To which the suggested fix was to re/re the engine. To the tune of $9250 for the engine, and about 15 hours labour.

The insurance co is saying that they don't think it's accident related, and therefore they're suggesting that it's not insurance. Volvo tells me that they've not seen this type of failure, and have only ever replaced one engine, which is as a result of a customer never changing oil.

This vehicle was maintained pretty much by the book. And Volvo confirms this. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this, which might point this back to the accident, or the previously mentioned shudder? And failing that...can anyone suggest a good engine source. I'm in Western Canada...so freight may be an issue.

thanks for your help

If they saved all parts see if the oil pan and pickup tube o-rings were bad. If so that was the cause of the spun bearing. Pretty common for the o-rings to be bad.

Wow, sorry about the engine. My two cents is that insurance will just continue to say no until pressed and then quit responding.

Since the vehicle is out of warranty, possibly a certified used engine. This place had been recommended on another volvo forum for having quality used engines. Being you are in Canada, shipping might be dicey, but, it's in upstate NY and maybe they know how to do it economically.

Spending 10grand ona newengine for a vehicle which is only worth that or slightly more just doesn't make sense. A used engine is probably a viable alternative.
