2004 XC90 T6 transmission problem

I have a used 2004 XC90 T6 with 170000 miles. It has run fine until a few days ago when I noticed the car was very slow to switch gears. Starting from almost stopped is really slow and sluggish and it takes a long time to switch gears. It feels like it struggles to get into gear 2 from 1st gear. Then a message came up that said "Transmission service urgent". Do you think this could be a simple fix like new transmission fluid or do I need a new transmission? I know the T6 XC90's commonly have transmission problems, and I'm not really in the mood to pay $4000+ to Volvo because they put an inadequate GM tranny in this car. Any ideas on what my problem could be? Has anyone had any luck with getting Volvo corporate to pay for a replacement transmission? Being that my car has 170,000 miles, I think I'm out of luck. Thanks.
