Default 2006 Transmission Service Question

Hello everyone I'm going to change the transmission filter and fluid on our 2006 XC 90, but I read their are two transmissions. Can you look at a vin and tell or the pan on the transmission? I've also read to use Volvo atf if so where can I purchase that besides the dealer? Thanks for all the help.

even BMW had their transmissions replaced because of the life time thing

fluid needs to be refreshed every 40k or so

The oem Volvo atf has the JWS3309 fluid specification. An atf with that rating can be used like the Mobil 3309 or Toyota T-IV.

What is the size of your motor? Mine has the V8 motor in my 07' XC90.

I took my car in for extended warranty work in beginning of 2013 for something else and I asked them about transmission flush. At the time, my XC90 just reached 70K miles. The adviser told me not to worry about it until 100K miles.

I do own couple of BMW's and they also told me not to worry about until 100K as well. On the 3 Series, I had it flushed out at 100K and now at every 40K miles. The tranny shift like butter even with 176K miles on the tranny.

Thanks for the replies they have been really helpful. The motor in ours is the 5 cylinder turbo. That's why I was wondering which model it was because when you read others thread's they talk about one being horrible and the other being great. Where do you recommend getting the fluid from?

I have always try to stay with the oem parts when possible. I would compare the oem Volvo transmission fluid with RedLine fluid. There's a application guide on their website to see if they even offered the fluid for your make and model.

Let us know what you end up doing for the fluid.
