I just purchased a new 2020 XC90 and love it by the way. However I am concerned about the cost of windshield replacement should I ever get a rock chip that cracks. The dealer offers a 3 year replacement with $0 deductible for $900. I understand the windshield can cost up to $2,000. I have collision avoidance, rain sensor, and heads-up.

Is it worth it to by additional windshield insurance? any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance

 

I'd check with your insurance carrier. I've always had glass coverage (USAA) but you'd have to find out if they have a rate specific to your car. I've needed to get a couple of replacements on my different cars - always the same story: rock chip on the highway creates a star crack, then the crack grows and time for a new windshield (most inspections use the "dollar bill" rule - ie cracks over 6 inches fail). Note that Safelite offers an epoxy injection repair that is supposed to keep the cracks from growing, so if you decline the expense, just make sure to follow up should you ever get a ding.
