Angry Pronounced Vibration

I have a 2017 S90 Inscription that has a very pronounced vibration at speeds above 55MPH. I've had it to the dealership twice...they told me the wheels needed to be balanced--which we did. No improvement. Second time they told me it needed a special type of balancing...extra cost involved. We had it done....no improvement. For a car that cost $54K+ and has only 17K miles, this is very annoying!

Which wheels and tires do you have on your XC90? I'm wondering if this is a Pirelli issue, although ours are balanced out pretty nicely at the moment. Does the vibration change if you downshift to 6th or 7th gear while at highway speed? Not that it should matter but I've noticed some vibration at 60mph when the car is in 8th gear.

Factory installed Continental Tires, The vibration starts at approx. 50MPH and gets worse until levelling off, but still VERY noticeable at 65/70MPH

What size wheels? We have the 20" Inscription wheels here.

Default 2017 XC90 Vibration

My 2017 XC90 with Air suspension, 21 inch has the exact problem "Vibration at 55 MPH or higher" Balanced the tires and did alignment but did not resolve the issue . I took it to the Volvo dealer, they told me that needed 2 new front tires. I bought two new OEM tires and have the dealer to balance and installed it. After I got the car back and driving it home , noticed the exact vibration in steering wheel and seats. Took the car back to the Dealer and have one of their service tech drive the car with me and He noticed the problem. The car has been sitting at dealer for past 3-4 days with no answer .

Make sure they do a road force balance on the tires. Not just a normal mount and balance. Are they Pirelli tires? I just bought an Audi sedan and the winter wheels came with Pirellis on them. Three of them were out of round and needed to be replaced right away. Our 2016 XC90 has the 20" Pirellis on it now and the vibration is mostly gone but the next set I put on will be Michelins. Best of luck with your issue. let us know what they find.

I have had the same issue and they have replaced several "warped rotors". My dealer says they can't duplicate it, so they won't do anything about it. Did you get your issue resolved?

Default 2017 Volvo XC90 - Intense Intermittent Shaking

Hello All,

I bought a 2017 Volvo XC90 new. We started to notice some intense shaking at high speeds. Feels like the vehicle is going to break apart when it occurs. The whole vehicle shakes pretty intensely. Enough to where you think you need to pull over. The Scottsdale dealer here in AZ has been garbage to deal with. All they have done is force balance the wheels which did nothing but make my front left and back right tires bald just 2-3 weeks after that repair. And the dealer said it was a maintenance issue. We've also had 7 warped rotors replaced. Volvo says all normal but come to find our from once of their service techs that Volvo has an issue with the XC90 brakes. It's a squeal they apparently cannot solve so they put on an organic brake pad which solves the noise but your brakes go out anywhere from 8K to 20K. My XC90 get about 12K out of the rear brakes and about 15K our of the front pads. But again, all normal according to Volvo. It's all in your breaking habits they say. Funny thing is my same breaking habits get me 80K out of my Chevy truck. Takes me YEARS before I have to replace brake pads on my truck.

My question is - has anyone had any resolve to this mysterious shaking in their XC90?

I have a 2016 Volvo XC90 T6 and also have the intense shaking at high speeds. I cannot replicate and it doesn't happen all the time but when it does appears appear its above 65+ mph. Feels like the lane departure warning vibration but never goes away. First time it happen I was on the freeway, as soon as I pulled over and restarted the car the problem went away. I'm guessing its either one of the sensors like the lane departure warning or a vacuum issue. I've taken it to the dealership twice now but since it cannot be replicated they can't fix it. I'm surprised they haven't found the solution since there are enough people complaining about it.

Anyone out there find a Volvo tech that has figured this out??? I hope this turns into a recall of some sort so we can all move on...

I am experiencing the same issue on my 2017 XC 90 - the shaking usually starts after the car is warmed up and at Highway speeds above 70 mph. First time it happened I pulled over and thought I would need to get towed. Shaking stops once you stop the car and go again. The dealer could not duplicate the problem, fixed one engine mount but did not resolve the problem. I am going back next week but I am not hopeful they will be able to identify the issue based on the comments I see in this thread.

Default Same problem, hard to reproduce, but may have found the problem

My dealer thinks that the problem has something to do with the lane assist features. He drove the car, experienced the vibrations, then disabled lane assist and it stopped.

Another issue could be water inside the rim. For me it doesn’t happen when it rains. Only when it snows. 🤦‍♂️
car shakes like crazy at 50+ mph. Then levels at high speed

Suggest having the wheel bearings checked. They could be defective and/or may not have been properly packed with grease when originally installed.

Perhaps this URL may offer some addition insights:

Default Same problem solved

Some years ago I had the same problem with my s40 2006. Backing home, in a highway intire car was shaking. I went in a dealer and they said was ok. Looked for a lot in internet and discovered that the problem was the Front CV Axle. I changed and the problems stopped.

My wife and I are so frustrated on how Volvo's Customer service Is so far. I have asked them to perform an alignment and possibly change the tires. They wouldn't!

What do I do? Any similar experiences ? Please share.

Car has air suspension btw.

Thanks

thoroughly inspect upper and lower control arms, I replaced the ones on my customers xc and the report back was 80% of the vibration was gone

Anyone have a resolve to this? I have a 2017 xc90 with air suspension. Today makes 4th trip to dealership-- new tires, rotors, brakes, alignment, balance, force balance= STILL DOES NOT FIX it! The dealership is blowing me off... I am at the end. Next--trade it in... even though I love it.
Thanks!

Since your issue arises as you increase speed, perhaps it is due to rotation of another component, such an out-of-balance drive shaft. I'm not sure how to check or verify this, but perhaps a fellow Swedespeed member many have more knowledge on this. One would think that, given the number of owners who have complained about this issue AND have had Volvo authorize work to fix it, that Volvo could have done the proper diagnostic research to uncover the root cause of this issue. .

if you purchase a brand new car, and the same issue cannot be fixed by the dealer and/or manufacturer after 3 times of service on the same issue, you can ask for a new replacement or get refund, says Lemon Law.

Any resolution to this? I have the same problem with my 2017 XC90 Inscription w/air suspension. Problem is, it's difficult to duplicate. Some days it'll start vibrating terribly around 75mph, then won't stop vibrating until below 40mph. Other days I can go as fast as I want and I can't get it to vibrate. I don't want to just take it into the dealer and start throwing money at it without knowing for sure what the problem is. These cars have been around long enough, and the problem is obviously common enough, that they should have figured out precisely what the problem is and how to fix it. Has anyone had success with this?

Do you have one of those tires that has a foam ring inserted into the tire to reduce tire noise? If yes, could it possibly be that one of your tires has a loose foam ring?

For you to get the vibration you mentioned, this is coming from rotating mass somewhere. As dumb as this sounds, I'd also suggest checking the lug nuts to if any are loose, as well.

You can check the lug nuts yourself. As for the tires, it might be worth it to take it to a tire shop, pay them a few bucks, and ask them to high-speed balance your tires. If you do have a foam insert, and if it is loose, hopefully they'll be able to detect it.

These suggestions may not amount to much, but it might be worth a try.
