Search and read everything on this forum and one or two others is your best bet on research. It won't take that long as even the most popular XC90 forums aren't all that active. I spent about 1/2 a weekend day and walked away with everything I thought I needed to know to start car shopping. Plus you'll get lots of nuance & tidbits that you won't get in answers to this question, and you'll start to build a knowledge base for later.
For starters what you have heard thus far is lacking enough specificity to just be flat out wrong. The 2.5Ts have generally proven very reliable (2004 included), as has the T6 motor itself (though the T6 transmission is to be avoided).
