Did I make a mistake? T6 2004 XC90
I just purchased a 2004 Volve XC90 from ebay on a no reserve auction.
67,600 miles
T6 2.9L Motor
AWD
3rd row of seats
Clean title, 1 owner.
Purchase price is 10,300 but all said an done it will be 11,210. (Taxes and Fees).
I was looking to get a SUV since I have 2 children an didn't want to get a van. This volvo fit the bill, low miles, extra seats. Not only that, but two small turbos? Performance and space I was hooked. Now I stumble upon this site and it looks like the t6 motor/trans has nothing but problems. Will I be alright ?

Hi and welcome to the site.
You can check consumers reports and maybe the reviews on Cars.com to see if it's a normal problem or just a few people complaining. There are some differences in year models when it comes to bad tranny's for Volvos. I have not read up on them but maybe someone will chime in.

I bought the exact same year and model last November. I had gotten a power train warranty from the dealer. started having tranny problems. Took it to Certified Transmission. I now have a new transmission in my T6. Cost me around $600 out of pocket....better than the $5000.....so I would suggest getting a warranty if you can.

Do a search and you will find out that eventually all these transmissions fail "prematurely." At 67.5k you're due unless the car has already had one done, and it may well have. There is some ameliorating news:
1. VCNA is pretty good about helping out with first time failures out-of warranty, even for 2nd owners.
2. There has been a class action suit and settlement.
3. As the transmission is a very slightly modified and relatively simple GM model that was used in bazillions of cars, costs are pretty cheap for repair/rebuilding. You should be in the $3000 or less range as opposed to the $5000 - $7500 range, and there are shops that rebuild them with higher tolerance parts for higher-torque applications (and high torque is the problem when you mate them with the T6).
4. Some have been reported to last as long as 100k+ miles before they fail, maybe that'll be you.

im in your boat.
hi, i just bought my first volvo after my bmw 528i blew up. ive never even driven one before and took it for a test drive and then took my new 2003 xc90 home the next day.
oops. maybe i should have read up and not been so impuslive, but hey, that's what i did with my bimmer, and i loved that car.
mine has 114K and was in pretty rough shape mostly dirty and neglected, but kind of a hard life so far.
after much cleaning and polishing and fixing, it's looking really good, and now im just waiting for the first mechanical issue to strike.
it is really fun to drive tho, it's my first suv, and i'm lovin it.
good luck to you...and me.

I am a Volvo fan, but please stay away from this vehicle. If you can, sell it now before is too late. All this SUV’s have transmission problems. As you know there is even a civil class action lawsuit against Volvo Cars due to this transmission failure. I read all the bad feedback from this car before buying mine, but didn’t wanted to believe it. After my SUV is beautiful, comfortable and never been in a car accident. Then doomsday arrive; recently I spend $5,259.81 at the dealership on what was supposed to be a new transmission and end up being a rebuild/re-manufactured one. Some owners of XC90’s have even paid as much as $6,000.00 in this Volvo so call “new transmission”. Before the new transmission I spend approximately $1,300 in transmission related problems all in a period of 3 months. Volvo of N.A. didn’t change my transmission free of charge, because I am the second owner and apparently the first owner never took the car to an authorized dealership. If you don’t service the XC90 at a dealership every single time, Volvo N.A. will not change the transmission for free. Plus the new transmission they install will be the same crappy one type that the car originally came with. Most owners have reported other problems like bushings on front right and left, rear wheel bearing, electrical system failed, and water inside headlights or the cabin every time it rains or you wash the car. They use pleather for the seats instead of leather. The SUV is beautiful, but don’t let this fool you. Do not buy this car. Some vehicles have gone thru 3 transmissions. Do not buy any Volvo model’s. They are not the same since the company was sold in 1999. I use to have Volvo 240 GL back in 1990. I was safe and reliable. You can even still see a few of them on the road. Shame they don’t make them like this anymore. Now a day’s Volvo’s are poorly manufactured.
