We have previously owned a 2008 D5 which has been de-commissioned due to a broken valve. We are looking for a new XC90 now. Our mechanic, an official Volvo specialist (not at Volvo), says we need to stay away from the D5. He says they are fraught with trouble.

We've just seen a 2012 D5 that we really like and are wondering if the warning would apply to the newer model also. I read that Volvo replaced the D5 motor in 2010, so does anybody know if the 2012 D5 is likely to be more reliable than the 2008?
