Default Engine Oil for a 2017 XC90 T6

We recently bought an 2017 Volvo XC90 T6 with 33,000 mile on the clock. In researching what synthetic oil to use I found, to my dismay, that the only engine oil that will not void the Volvo warranty is Castrol Edge Pro V 0W-20, and that it only available through Volvo dealers. I contacted several dealers in NC and SC and found that they get that oil in 50 gallon drums and cannot sell me even 10 quarts. My question is not the legality of this, but is there any other engine oil available that I could buy over-the-counter and would not void the Volvo warranty?

Yes, but only a couple options. The oil must meet VCC RBS0-2AE specification. I think LiquiMoly makes one.

Thank you. Liqui Moly does meet the Volvo specs, as does Motul Specific RBSO-2AE available in 1 L CAN, 5 L CAN, 20L DRUM, and 208L DRUMs High Performance 100% Synthetic Fuel Economy Engine Oil specially designed for "VOLVO "DRIVE-E" Gasoline engines". A list of local dealers for Motul oil is available on their web site at https://www.motul.com/us/en-US/produ...cific-rbs0-2ae.

Feeling better as I can buy Volvo spec oil for my XC90 locally.

Just got this from Castrol: "A new product, Castrol EDGE 0W-20 V, is expected to launch late this year in 2021 which will be sold in the retail space covering the Volvo VCC RBS0-2AE oil specification."

This is curious. I own a 2017 XC90 T6 with 65K miles. The owner's manual specifies
Oil Viscosity

Incorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine life under normal use. SAE 5W-30 will provide good fuel economy and engine protection. See the viscosity chart.

Extreme engine operation

Volvo oil VCC RBS0-2AE/SAE 0W20 is recommended for extreme driving conditions.”
But, yesterday I receive a letter from Volvo Cars USA LLC which states:
Please add this insert to your owner’s manual for future reference.

Oil Specification

4-cylinder engines: Volvo oil VCC RBS0-2AE/SAE 0W20 is recommended for all driving conditions. This oil must never be used in 5- or 6- cylinder engines.

Oil Viscosity

Incorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine life under normal use. SAE 5W-30 for 5- or 6- cylinder engines, and 0W-20 for 4-cylinder engines will provide good fuel economy and engine protection.

Extreme Engine Operation

“5- or 6- cylinder engines only: SAE 0W-30 oil meeting ACEA A5/B5 requirements
I am personally less concerned about voiding warranty and more concerned about protecting my engine. Is this updated requirement for 0W-20 merely for gas mileage? Will 5W-30 provide better engine protection?

VERY strange that a auto manufacturer would update the oil recommendation 4 years after manufacturer?!

It's to prevent oil consumption, not fuel mileage.
