Default key replacement

Help! I live 90 minutes from the nearest Volvo dealer and I have lost the key part to the fob to my 2009 xc90. It is crazy to see what they will charge me to get a replacement but please tell me there is another option than towing my car 60 miles. It is something I truly cannot afford. I live in a rural area with competent mechanics but no specialized equipment. I am pretty desperate and am looking for any avenue that will help. Thank you in advance.

Keep looking, in the meantime call a few dealers around the country and find one that will ship you a key.

My key is not chipped and I can call University Volvo in Charlotte, send them proof of my ownership, and they overnight me a key. Not 100% sure they can cut a key for your truck but I don't see why not.

The key needs to be programmed. So a cut key will open the door and that's it.

Can you tell where exactly is the chip? I lost the metal key piece but not the main part of the fob. If the chip is in the fob then getting a new cut key would allow me to still start the car. There is a seam on the key fob where the key broke apart. Looking online it seems like it is fairly common spot. I am spelling this out because I guess there is a small chance that the chip could be in that small plastic front section of the fob.

Thank you so much for your help.

The key integrated remote is two parts, a key portion and the remote portion. If you pop the battery cover off, you'll see where they come apart. The programming transponder is in the key portion, presumably in the plastic part (but there is no documentation about that). You cannot get just the metal key, it comes as that whole portion which attaches to the remote. So if they cut the metal portion, you would have to figure out a way to get it into the current plastic portion of the key side of the KIR.

If I were you, I would check eBay. I have fixed key assemblies for Mercedes Benz and Lexus that had chips in the key base and remote part of the flip out part. If they have good feedback and a long standing account they likely know what they are doing.

A few will even pre-cut the key off of a photo. You don't have that ability but some do offer that service.
