I have a 2008 XC90 with 68,000 miles. Recently I have noticed a knocking noise coming from the back right of the vehicle, in the rear wheel area. It sounds as if something is "rolling" in the back of the vehicle when you are accelerating, stopping or going over a bump. I had the vehicle in for a for a full service 2 weeks ago and the dealership could not find anything. Anyone have any suggestions? The noise is both annoying and worrysome.

 

I really don't know but I recently had a sound coming from the front end of my 960. Sounded like a baseball in a metal bucket while I was driving over rough or patchy road surfaces. It was the sway bar links. They were worn and making the noise. i replaced them myself and it fixed my problem.

Did you manage to find what the problem was, my volvo c70 has had the same sound alarming knocking sound in the back wheel yesterday but today it has disappeared.

Genrally this is caused by the upper rear shock mount. The rubber wears out. Most likely you can pull up the carpeting in the trunk right behind the rear seats which will expose the shock mount. You will be able to wiggle the top of the shock back and fourth and will probably see black particles from the worn rubber if it's bad
