My vehicle: Volvo XC90 (2006) Diesel, Geartronic, automatic, 5 cylinder, 7 seater, D5

My issue: There is a loose lever dangling, disconnected, looks like its been that way for a while. My local garage says it has been disconnected purposely and left in a position where it will not reconnect.

What is this lever for and whats the worst that can happen if I reconnect it ?

I don't know what that would be on a diesel but I'd sure want to find out what it is as it's likely something Volvo thought was needed on that engine.
