New Member/Future XC90 Owner
Guys! Hello. Little about myself: I have always owned German vehicles, Audi, BMW, Merc and VW. I have recently come in contact with a friend of a friend who has an 06 XC90 with the 2.5 motor and 143k on the ticker. My wife and I have been wanting one for a while. Right now we have a suburban with a big block in it and we don't like it at all. We have 4 kids (all under 5) so we need the 3rd row. Anyway, it takes me forever to make decisions on vehicles so I have been reading a lot on here and doing other research on XC90's. So this friend has this car that shut down on her way from Phoenix to St. George Utah. The message "oil pressure needed" came up on the info bar, all the lights on the dash came on and it shut down and would not restart. It currently sits at an indy shop here in town that told her it needs an engine. Upon conversing with the seller she said that they basically gave it a "once over" ie oil level, battery, alternator, all the easy stuff and told her it needs an engine. She wants to sell it to me for 2k. So far I have read that the oil pressure switch fails and the oil pan needs to be resealed. 2k is a pretty sweet deal if I can get it running IMO. What are you're guys thoughts? Does the 2.5 motor fail? I know for a fact the indy shop did no oil pressure check, no compression test or leak down test of any kind. I have only externally inspected the vehicle and found no obvious signs of oil splatter, coolant loss ect. The seller has all receipts of work done for example routine oil changes, timing belt and WP, leak detection pump, valve cover gaskets and PCV. She did a good job on maintenance which is why I am so skeptical on catastrophic engine failure.
Let me know what your thoughts are. If I don't get this car, I will surely get another later on. Thanks!

Maybe take the vehicle to be diagnosed first. The brand is superb in long lasting, but if your friend drove it rough, and didn't take care of it, you should know of any other problems before dropping 2k on it. Any auto shop should be able to give you a run down of what needs to be fixed.
