RE: Newbie to buy XC90
There are two transmissions equipped on the XC90s; GM & Yamaha. Steer clear of the GM units, as they have horrible reputation, some people tried to drive a brand new XC90 away from the dealer right after buying it, and the transmission died.
If you still insist on an XC90 with the GM transmission, get an extended warranty that covers the transmission. Extended warranty is 80% of the time worthless & just a way for companies to make money by selling nothing, but this case seems to be the rest of the 20%.
Good luck finding a decent XC90,
JPN

RE: Newbie to buy XC90
This is what I learned.... In 07 the T6 is no longer available (6 cyl. twin turbo) It was replaced by the non turbo 6 cyl. I believe it is a 3.2 liter. This may have happened in 06 though. With the T6 going away I believe the transmission problems have also gone away (the ones you read about in the forums). In 07 you can get the 2.5T, 6 cyl, or 8. I ended up looking at 05's and 06's for due to price and the options. I wasn't able to find a 06. I think they are all still in lease. I went with the 05 because I was able to find the V8 with all the options, lower miles for the same (3K cheaper) than the 07 base model. I went back and forth on the T6. Different dealers told me different things but I ended up using my gut feeling and what I read on the posts. Although I am happy with the car I am still going to buy a extended warrenty for a piece of mind. As for pricing. I bought mine from a honda dealer. They knew about the car but didn't know what was exactly on it. I believe I got a little better deal on the price of it due to that. I looked at some 04's with a little higher mls and more options but in T6's. They were beat up and I went back to the one I bought due to the V8 again, condition of the car and the options. As for my trade in..... I took it in the shorts but I would have anywere I would have traded it in. Old's vans have NO trade in value. At least I know the Volvo will hold some value. Good Luck.

RE: Newbie to buy XC90
maybe OP already bought one but here's my story.
2 months ago I bought a 2007 xc90 v8 sport, fully loaded less navi for $39k, new. yes new. I used leasing as my form of financing the purchase, putting a large down payment and sorting a small final purchase while keeping my monthlypayment where I wanted it. The only issue doing this is that you need higher coverage on your insurance, but since I already lease my car for my business we had the extra coverage already.
The dealers have additional incentives for leasing so we got an additional $9k price reduction by leasing instead of buying. The msrp for our car was $54k...something to think about.

I've bought my XC90 3.2 AWD 3rd row versatility package, premium package, convenience package, climate package (you need versatility package and premium package for 3rd row) for $40k.
www.carsdirect.com gives your very reasonable price. I beleive you can negotiate below their price.
