Is this one of the troublesome transmissions?
Thank goodness for this forum! We are negotiatingto buy this T6 and after reading this forum, I need your advice. It sound like this is one of the cars that may give us trouble. What do you think?
The car is a 2004 AWD:
2.9L twin turbo I6 engine w/intercooler[*]4-speed driver-adaptive Geartronic automatic transmission w/OD
The car has 44,000 miles and has been serviced very well.

- What major parts are failing?
- Are there any aftermarket solutions?
- Is the transmission shared with any other platforms, or is it XC90 Specific (other makes/models)?
Any help would be appreciated, I'm debating between the purchase of an XC90 T6 or a BMW X5 4.4i, the XC appeals more to me because of the available 3rd row.

RE: Is this one of the troublesome transmissions?
Hi,
- What major parts are failing?
Tranny itself. They were poorly designed or manufactured. Definitely not up to today's requirements; one person noted that his tranny failed right after he bought the vehicle as brand-new[8D].
- Are there any aftermarket solutions?
Negative.
- Is the transmission shared with any other platforms, or is it XC90 Specific (other makes/models)?
The V8 models come with Yamaha-built tranny. They do not exhibit problems as in the case of the GM unit.
If I were given the choice, I would go with Bimmer. However, if you can find a V8XC90, it would be a competitive alternative to the Bimmer. Getting the T6 would ruin your driving pleasure.

Also, does anyone know the actual part #/model name of the GM transmission? I would guess that a similiar transmission is used in a GM vehicle.

RE: Is this one of the troublesome transmissions?
Looks like the transmission part number is a GM4T65, also used in some of the GM minivans, and in FWD configuration in their larger passenger cars, IE impala/monte carlo etc.
Talking with a few GM techs the main problem with the gear box is bearing (known as an Input Carrier bearing) failure in the main planetary set, which basically causes the trans to eat itself.
I'm going to do some digging and see if there is anyone out there with a better solution to the stock Input Carrier.
I really like the prospect of the T-6, but it may prove to convince me to just get an X-5.
