Our 06 2.5T needs a new engine!
We took our XC to Florida for Spring Break and it ended up in a shop in Jacksonville. Gabriel the owner of Autobahn of Jacksonville hooked it up to Vida and it revealed a misfire in Cylinder 4. Compression test has it at 30 psi and leak down test revealed an exhaust valve leak. The engine has 251k miles and we are opting to change the entire engine rather than doing a head job. What is the going rate for parts and labor to complete this job? He is suppose to call me Monday to give me a quote. I just want to be prepared for the upcoming wallet buster.
you can shop for used engines using car-part.com to search local yards. For my guess, I'd expect a complete 2.5T engine with 100 to 150K miles to be in the 500-750 range and the install to be 10-12 shop hours - or about 1750-2000 total.
Thanks for the link!! I found one for $950 that only has 80k miles on it. It's from an S80 but it should bolt right up on my XC90? I made sure the it at he'd my Vin and is a 2.5 L. Shop quoted $2k for labor plus 200 for misc. supplies.

Volvos use a modular engine code to describe the variants of each engine ie B5254T2 which tells you its a gas, 5 cylinder, 2.5 L 4 valve Turbo, 2nd generation engine. You can use the Volvo Modular Engine wiki to compare to see similarities - mostly the big changes were things like adding VVT (first exhaust cam, then both) and changes to the engine management system or tweaks for Cali emissions. That will help give you an idea of what's interchangeable as a direct fit or what may fit with some component reuse.
PS - Given your shop is quoting you $2K in labor, you may want to shop around including calling a dealer to see what they quote for book labor time. The labor rate will vary shop by shop (less at an indy, more at a dealer). Most shops should be using a quote system based on the job description so the hours should be consistent shop to shop.
