Default Oxygen Sensor

I have a 'Check Engine' light and apparently need an O2 sensor replaced (one upstream of Cat. Convertor). My Volvo dealer is quoting over $500, but have a Volvo specialist that will do it for around $250 (using non-Volvo part). Even that seems way to high though for what I thought was a pretty simple thing. I am now thinking about just doing it myself. I have found the sensor for $140-$160 online (non-Volvo part). Anyone ever try to replace this one themselves? I can't find any more information or other experiences online. Probably because the darn thing is supposed to last to 100K miles.

2003 XC90 T6 AWD with ~80Kmiles

Thanks!
John

Default RE: Oxygen Sensor

WHich side of the engine? there are 2 oxygen sensor on upstream of cat... bank 1 and 2.... Not that easy to replace. may require to go under left front fender well to unplug connector or other way is to remove air box and try to get to it closer to the back of transmission... It's not easy to replace if u are not familiar of repairing cars. As a personal opinion I stay away from aftermarket oxygen sensor. If u get it done at a after market shop you should buy a Factory o2 sensor to installed to vehicle. I've seen some odd driveability issues with after market o2 sensor before...

I had the same issue with my Volvo 1996 850. I ended up buying the sensor myself and letting my mechanic do the job. It was so simple if you have some mechanical skills. He also replaced a leaky fuel filter and charged me only $50. The fuel filter was really the challenge because it was old and rusted. I had contemplated letting a shop do the job but once they put the car up on a lift and I saw where the sensor was located, I was like this looks simple. After the job was done a week later I took the emission test and passed with flying colors. Check Rock Auto for prices before buy.
