Poor MPG in 2022 XC90 T5 AWD
Hello all, this is my first post and I just bought my first Volvo a few weeks ago. I'm very impressed with it so far, but there are a few things I'm not loving. I came from Mercedes and Cadillac so the amount of features you get for the price is really impressive, and I love the minimalist interior design.
One thing that really drew me to the XC90 was the great hwy mpg. 28 highway and 23 combined is great compared to my old Escalade.
When I check the mpg manually however, I'm only getting about 18.7 combined. Most of the driving (2000 miles so far) has been highway, I'd say roughly 75-80%, little to no stop and go traffic and very little city driving. I leave the auto stop engaged so it saves fuel while sitting at the stop lights and I keep my speed less than 7-8 over the speed limit so I don't drive it crazy fast either.
I've tried different fuels from 88 to 93 octane and it really doesn't seem to make a difference. The 91 premium here in Iowa doesn't have ethanol but it got over 20 combined on the 93 which is 91+10% Ethanol.
Do I just chalk it up to the engine being brand new and it needs broken in a bit further? One talk of gas is only getting me around 300 miles or so, give or take, I'm used to a much larger tank so when the pump stops at $45 I'm not upset by any means.

If most of your mileage is hwy, then use the cruise and DON'T set it over 70. As the speed increases, so does the drag proportionately. When I was younger, I always chose speed, radar detector, etc over economy. Now I've found less aggressive driving allows me to actually see more of the country while driving relaxed with the cruise set around the speed limit. My blood pressure is even less while my MPG went up
.The rest of your MPG issue could very well be the gas you're buying. 91 octane is not a suggestion, it's mandatory. A supercharged AND turbocharged engine requires it. The extra performance along with better mileage should make up the difference in cost. If you buy something like COSTCO premium, you'll buy the best gas you can purchase along with a discount. Not sure why, but it always seems their stations and pumps are cleaner as well.
BTW, you've got a nice car
