Roof top Cargo Boxes
I have both Yakima Rocket Box and an older Thule box. Both are great and seemingly will last forever. I would stay away from other brands of boxes as they seem to me to be poorly made or of much inferior materials.
I just ordered the Thule Boxter. Have not got it yet. All boxes are wayyy overpriced. Mine was the top of the line and was $899 at REI but I did have a 20% off. All those boxes are injected molded plastic, they should be much cheaper.
I have the Thule Ascent 1700 (bought from Volvo) and love it. It has 17cu. feet and fits quite a bit. When my family travels, I put our luggage set (which has three rolling suitcases as well as a few other bags) in the box. Without it, we wouldn't have been able to take everything we needed to the beach this summer - we have a 1yr old, so tons of baby stuff! It's simple and feels secure.
This box has black textured surface, so it doesn't show scratches much which I like. We were considered a 18cu. foot model at Volvo, but it had a smooth silver top. So, we like the aesthetic of the black and the resistance to showing surface wear.
Fits perfectly atop the xc90.

Hello Sweedehorse4me, Just following up on your 2011 post, do you continue to use the Ascent 1700 with your XC90 and has this been as positive still? Also, do you know which model of the Ascent 1700 it is (e.g., 605 is the biggest) you have? For cross bars do you have the aeroodynamic ones (e.g Wingbars)? Is the box too high to access easily or ok? Finally, are you able the access the rear hatch without any interference? Many thanks, Robert
