I just purchased a 2008 XC90 AWD and would like to purchase snow chains just in case I need them in the Tahoe area. OEM's are very expensive, and Volvo says they only approve of their own brand. Are there any other chains that provide the same clearence as the OEM's? I was looking at Security Chain Super Z6, SZ429.

Looking at the Volvo web site, and being sure Volvo doesn't make the chains them selves, I'm sure they are from Thule.

I just bought a set for about a third of what Volvo charges.

Thule has one of those worthless, unlinkable all flash web sites, so here's a link that does work:

Thanks Larry. I have 235/65 R17 tires. Have you tried your chains on for size? I assume the clearance is adequate.

 

Yep, I have the same tire. I did try them on for size and they fit fine.

Definitely I'm done forever with cable chains. Chain chains are the way to go.

 

Hi! I have the same size tire on my 2006 XC90, but in the winter I use tires with studs (in Norway). Still, when I drive to my mountain cabin I sometimes need chains. Not so much for getting up the hills, but more when I am driving back down. I bought some "cheap" chains and they work fine, they are a type of fast mounting chains.

 

There is currently a new set of Volvo factory chains on Ebay. About 1/3 the original price
