Default Spare Key

I am trying to get a second key for my 2004 XC90, I have the original keyless remote and asked the dealer for the price....I was quoted $420 after taxes . Has anyone been able to program a new key anywhere else beside the dealer?

There are new un-cut keys from eBay, will a locksmith with the proper software be able to program it?
This is what the dealer quoted me:
$85 for the key ALONE
$164 for the Fob/Remote
$120 programing the key (1 hour)
+ taxes

Can it be done else where?

Hi Net, and welcome to VolvoForums.

Yes it can be done elsewhere, like another dealer.

I contacted couple of the high-end locksmith shops in town, they make any benz or BMWs but not Volvo

I am hoping someone was able to cut and program the key anywhere else beside the dealer

You may be able to get a key from another dealer. I'm not sure if they need the car or not. Check with a couple of other dealers on the phone.

Will never buy another Volvo, went to get a spare key/remote from the dealer in Florida, figured maybe $200 because I knew it was expensive, but $468 is nothing but a rip off. Obviously they don't care to have repeat Volvo customers!

Man, that is less than the cost of a new car payment. What heppened to the other keys?

I understand the frustration. I work in a Volvo parts department and get yelled at daily about key prices.

In all honestly it's going to be incredibly hard to find anyone else who can program it. Both the key and remote require software to be downloaded to the car before either can be programmed, and dealers are the only people that are authorized to have access to it.
