Replacing the spare tire doughnut with a full size spare tire.

Replacing the spare tire doughnut with a full size spare tire.
For anybody that has the 01 to 07 model, I thought I'd share what I did in a seperate thread as a reference.
I have an '01 that came with a 17" doughnut. I have 16" Volvo OEM wheels on my car (whichever ones came with the touring package according to the window sticker).
When I bought the car, the doughnut was slashed. I decided to go on eBay and find myself a Volvo OEM full size 16" wheel and see what they went for. I measured the spare tire compartment and in theory it would fit a full size tire.
I found you can find the 16" wheels here and there anywhere between $40 to $100. I got lucky and found mine for $45 with $20 shipping.
I then found a used Michelin MX4+ tire to match for about $25. It has maybe 80% tread life left.
Overall with mounting and balancing, I ended up paying about $120 total for a full size replacement tire that fit in the spare tire compartment. The ONLY bad part is you can't fit the plastic tray in there with a full size tire in there.
The only tire manufacturer I could find that made a new doughnut replacement was Continental, and at 2 different places, the price of the tire alone was $99 and there was usually at least a month wait for it.
The point to all of this is, if you don't mind loosing your tray in the back, you are probably better off buying a normal wheel and tire if you need to replace your spare instead of wasting money buying another one from the dealer or a tire shop. You'll get something better in return for about the same price.
And it is fairly easy to get in and out of the compartment. It's a little snug, but fits in there perfectly.
