Volvo has equipped their XC90 V8 with performance (V-rated) tires which are softer and thus stick better to the road than H-rated tires, however the VR also wear faster. That is the price we pay for performance. I was disappointed that I only got 21K miles on my OEM Michelin Pilot’s (235/60/18). I did a lot of research and found it is quite normal for the XC90 to need replacement of VR-tires after 15-20K miles (depending on your driving habits). Tire professionals and friends of mine who drive other “performance†vehicles such as BMW and Mercedes said I was actually lucky to get more than 15K. For comparison, a friend who drives a Dodge Viper, only got 5K miles out of his ZR tires!!!

During my research of alternative tire brands, I found equally many bad reviews on the Michelins the Pirelli Scorpions, so decided to try something new. I finally went with the Goodyear Eagle ResponsEdge w. 50,000 mile warranty. These V-rated tires feature racecar tested technology such as outer sidewall is reinforced with Carbon Fiber cords that stiffen the sidewall and help deliver a better feel for the road, while an InsuLayerTM made with DuPontTM KEVLAR® helps absorb road noise and vibration. They also have a higher weight rating (103V vs. 102V on the Michelins). The GoodYears were less expensive than the Michelins – after Goodyear came down from $220 (suggested retail) to 165/tire.You’ll pay less for H-rated tries, but then you might as well trade down from an XC90. Best of luck with you choice

When you buy new tires get it aligned as there is new toe settings for the rear as volvo messed all these from the factory. I have done countless set of tires at 20,000 miles or less. If you take it to the dealer they may warranty part of the cost of the tires. good luck

What size tire did you put on your car? My xc90 has the 18' rims and I didn't see my tire size on the Goodyear website.
I hope you get better wear with these tires.

There is always a trade between performance and longevity. But remember that the tire is the single component that provides contact to the road and as such should not be skimped on. I am running 20 inch Michelins on my XC90 and they are the exact same spec tire as on the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, you would not believe how much more grip you can get out of the XC90 with a really good set of tires- but yes they only last around 12k miles at most. In any case, I usually change the tires every one and a half years as the tire compund hardens with time, and given that many tires at the stores have been sitting there a while, the compound may already be hardening before they even get on your car- best is to check manufacture date on them before putting them on your car as well- stamp coded on the side wall usually.

I got the 235/60/18" which is identical to the OEM tires. Unfortunately theGoodYear search function is somewhat confusingso you have to play around a little to findthem. Here is the URL: http://www.goodyeartires.com/goodyea...p;sidewall=VSB.

I've only put 2350 miles on the tires but so far so good. These tires seem to have at least as goodperformance grip asthe OEM Michelin's but wereless expensiveandhave longer warranty!!! I would strongly recommend visiting or calling a dealer and negotiate the price. Suggested retail for mine were $220 e.a. My dealer listed them for $195but came down to $169 e.a. If you live in Denver, CO I would stronly recommend the following dealer:
GOODYEAR AUTO SERVICE CTR #8145
5646 S GIBRALTER WAY
CENTENNIAL,CO80015
(720)870-7010

The tire pressure sticker in the door says between 35 and 39. It really depends on the load your carrying, road conditions, the temperature and what type of tire. If youset the pressuretoo high you will likely wear the center fasterand if set too low you will wearthe edgesfaster. Somewhere in between is likely the optimal setting for most.36-37seems optimal for me with 2 adults, 2 kids and 1 dog without additional loads.

From my research the Volvo XC90 SUV are very hard on the tire wear. Owners are replacing their tires at 15-20k (mils). They claim due to the way the XC 90 SUV is build results in a fast wearing on the tires treads. I currently have Michelins Piolts but they are making a funny noise and treads have worn.

Here's a poll on the suggested tire replacment.
Online Poll » Results http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=64169

Nokian(37%, 38 votes)
Michelin Pilot MXM4(23%, 24 votes)
Bridgestone Alenza 255/55/18(9%, 10 votes)
Goodyear Eagle Response Edge 235/60/18(6%, 7 votes)
Toyo Proxes(5%, 6 votes)
Yokohama Geolander HTS 255/55/18(4%, 5 votes)
Cooper Zeon XST 255/55/18(3%, 4 votes)
Dunlop SP5000 M+S in 255/55-18(2%, 3 votes)

Pirelli Ice & Snow winter 235/60/18(0%, 1 votes)
Continental CrossContact LX 255/55/18(0%, 1 votes)

=====================================

I plan on getting the Nokian WR G2 SUV (all Season), they are hard to find and run about $230-$240 p/tire[] (may need to order online)

If i'm going to replace my tires every 15-20mil on my XC90, I figure it would run about the same $$ wise to invest inthe Nokian Tireswhich (is about 45,000 miles) If interested in the Nokian, check out Josh Spangler @ tiresbyweb@gmail.comor 800 576-1009 ext 775 (May offer a little discount- Tell him Liz from the volvo forum refrered you)

Default XC90 eats tires up...

Every 12-17,000 miles I am replacing tires on my 2010. Fortunately, I rotate them religiously and keep them aligned at AAA for strong records and because of that I often pay very little for replacements. Today I am getting new ones for the cost of 5% of the total for all 4 new tires. It will come to total of 89.00 bucks. Paper work tracking is annoying but worth it.
