Default too rusty to replace speed sensor? (2003 xc90, 130k miles)

Hi all, this is my first post. Apologies if I am in the wrong place.

I need a little help. We inherited my parents 2003 XC90 with around 130k miles. Up until recently we have had no problems at all. The last few days when we start it up in the morning we get a ABS light, yellow arrow, and flashing DSTC light. The car limps forward for about 5-15 seconds before we get any real power and then it drives normally.

I brought it to the local mechanic and he said that the computer says it is a speed sensor error. To replace the part is usually not too bad but he said it is very rusty in there and he almost guarantees something else will break in the process. He honestly said he could not give a ballpark of what the replacement would cost if something else breaks. He also did not really have a recommendation about how to move forward.

We'd like to get more out of this car if possible. Is it a mistake to try and replace this part given all the rust? Can we continue to drive with this faulty sensor? Thanks for any input!

Which sensor are you referring to , the vehicle speed sensor or a wheel speed sensor ?

For ex, the Front Left sensor is Volvo 8634237.
About $45 for PEX brand (I don't know much about PEX, but I heard it is good).
Or $70 at Volvo dealer.

When you replace the speed sensor, if it breaks, it is no big deal b/c you simply install new part.

Right Rear sensor is different.

This is the job that you can even do yourself, IF you know which (LF, RR etc.) sensor.

Translation - this is a PITA job and I don't want to do it.

Having tried to remove a front wheel ABS sensor on my 2000 V40, I can say I don't blame him.

You can not ignore this problem as your ABS system will no longer work and your car will fail its next inspection.

Yeah it's simple unless the bolt breaks. Or the sensor breaks in the spindle. They usually aren't too bad. I kinda doubt the diagnosis though.
