I am new to the board here, and new to Volvo, having never owned one yet.

I am contemplating purchasing a 2011 XC90 with 6 cylinder engine.

The vehicle does not have a trailer hitch on it, so I am wondering if anyone has installed a hitch on their XC90. Does the receiver / hitch just mount beneath the rear bumper area? Is there a way to connect trailer wiring or has the factory provided a connector / harness back there to plug trailer wiring into for tail lights and brake lights?

I will be transitioning out of my 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup truck with which I have been pulling a small flatbed ultility trailer to haul my John Deere lawn tractor. I may still need to haul the lawn tractor on the utility trailer from time to time and am wondering if a rear hitch and proper trailering wiring can be installed for an XC90?

I have not installed a hitch on a XC90 but I know hitches are available for that model with a weight capacity of 5,000 lbs for the Hidden Hitch option and 3,500 lbs for the Curt option. Here are the hitches on Hitchweb: 2011 Volvo XC90 Trailer Hitches

Your owners manual is your friend! See page 158. The AWD is rated for more than the FWD, and the rated tow capacity drops the more passengers you have in the car. In addition, the rating is limited to 1,700 lbs without trailer brakes regardless of passengers. Another thing that no rating will ever tell you is the height of the trailer plays a big part in how comfortable you will be towing. My Honda Odyssey does just fine pulling our low profile pop up camper that weighs 3,500 lbs, but struggled pulling a U-Haul that weighed 1,800 lbs. Finally, putting together a towing set up is more than just the weight of the trailer. Proper tongue weight as a percentage of the total trailer weight (min 10%) to avoid sway issues, individual axle weights, etc. all play a part. If it is just a small flatbed trailer with your lawn tractor (1,500 lbs or less?) that should never cause a problem, but the raw hitch capacity says nothing more than the capacity of that component assuming a proper install and has nothing to do with the towing vehicle.
