Default Transmission and gear ratio

Just got off the phone w/ the svc dept. (they were checking a hesitation in acceleration after idling) and they said the diagnostic came up that there was a gear ratio problem and it happened once, BUT in the past when they've seen this more often than not the transmission needs to be replaced. I dovetailed into the "what now??????????????" post and am checking on the wheel sensor recall (of course Volvo was in training when I called the 800 #), but otherwise am I doomed to need to get a new transmission? (2004 XC 90 w/50K - not a T6) or should I dump it?

Thoughts? Sympathies?

Did you notify the dealer before 50K miles? If not, I hope you have extended warranty. A new transmission can easily cost you $6K or more (in the US). I know there are people on this forumwho think extended warranty is a waste of money, but I can assure you it is worth while if you intend to keep your vehicle longer than the manufacturer's standard warranty. Volvos are too expensive to maintain otherwise.

We had similar things happen to our V8 with the 6-speed automatic over the last year (between 30 & 40K miles). After the dealer had made several software upgrade attempts, it turnedout to bean issue with theautomatic transmission control system - a defectivetransmission flow valve and gasket. It took them 2 days to obtain parts and repair. This was luckily covered underwarranty - including a free rental car.We did purchase the 100K mile extended warranty!!!

All the best to you.

[align=left]No, we do not have an extended warranty. Can we buy one @ this point and then if it is the transmission that goes at a later date would it be covered or considered a "pre-existing condition" and not covered? Just wondering. And of course this is happening @ 50,319 miles!

its probably something like an Incorrect gear ration for 4th gear, i see it all the time, just have them erase it and drive it. It will be ok for awhile.. Other wise id call volvo ( ask for help, LET them know that there are known problems with these vehicles and their trannys) they will give you assistance. The most i've ever seen for a 5cyls tranny installed was like 3200, But volvo will help you. especially if you've done your routine maintence at the dealer. they really like that..
