What does the support battery actually do?

What does the support battery actually do?
I have a notice on the dash of my 2018 XC90 about the start / stop needing service and from what I can tell, that means something called a support battery needs attention.
Can one of you kind folks tell me what exactly this support battery powers, and when? And also, where is it located?
