Default XC90 Radio

Trying to replace the stock radio on my 2006 XC90. One shop mentioned he would have to replace the amp in order for all the speakers to work. This would send the total cost up over $1,500. Another shop did not mention this and the cost for radio and install around $500. Is it necessary to replace the amp when installing a new aftermarket radio? Or will the stock amp work properly (all speakers work and sound good) with an aftermarket? There is also an integrated DVD system.

With all the information I am able to find in regards to changing the radio since I am opting to do the same and add satellite radio you're not able to do so since Volvo ran fiber optic and would interfere with other onboard systems.

Default Fibre optic in XC90

I believe you are incorrect or mis-informed regarding Fibre Optic.
YES there is Fibre Optic to the Radio Face from the Stereo Unit under the seat. The Key here is YOU MUST NOT CUT OR DISABLE THAT optic ; PERIOD.

I installed a Kenwood Double Dinn in my XC90 and it is awesome.
the easiest way to handle this is go to my prior messages regarding this and you will find a Youtube link to a Stereo Installer with great step by step installation information, step by step on how to do it.

the Key to doing an aftermarket install is knowing that the Stereo IS NOT what you see in the dash, that is only the screen for you to look at. The unit in the dash is the Body Control Module. The stereo unit is under the Passenger seat. You must be very careful and follow instructions to the letter when doing this. But, if you do, the sound is awesome!!!!!

I personally did the install and am very happy with it...

PS: DO NOT REMOVE THE BODY CONTROL MODULE UNIT. take the key pads off the screen while still attached to it. Bundle them, tape them in tight together. It will fit very nicely below the new stereo. This will keep all of your control systems in place.

WATCH THE VIDEO. IT IS GREAT. FOLLOW IT TO THE LETTER

Vincent

Good info in this thread. I am planning to replace my radio in the next month or 2, in the meantime I am trying to figure why my front speakers have no sound and the DVD system doesn’t power on. Any ideas?

Incorrect.
Please see the video and my posting dated 05/01/2020.
When you change the radio to a non-oem you must do the following:
1) the radio face in the dash is actually the Body Control Module. You must remove it to install the new radio. You take the key ends from the screen, tape them together, Plug it back in and stuff in the lower section behind the heater controls. Unplug everthing from the radio amp unit under the passenger seat. Separate the speaker wires as shown in the video.

bottom line, you DO NOT LOOSE THE FIBER OPTIC, IT WILL CONNECT TO YOUR NEW STEREO.

I DID THIS AND LOVE IT. LOOK ON YOU TUBE AND WATCH VIDEOS. IT DOES WORK. If I could attach a video or photo and show you I would.

I DID NOT HAVE TO PURCHASE A BUNCH OF EXTRA PARTS THAT REALLY ARE NOT NEEDED. I installed the radio properly without all that extra expense.

I DID NOT replace the amp. there is an easy way for this to work. there is a youtube video on this by a very good installer, good instructions. I installed my 7" double dinn radio, stereo with camera and DID NOT HAVE TO REPLACE THE AMP.

Basically you disconnect the speaker wires from the amp as well as the optic cable and connect to the new stereo system then you can plug the amp back in.

The AMP is A MUST TO KEEP.

also, THE FACTORY RADIO FACE in the dash is actually the body control module and you can't eliminate it. You need to disassemble it and tape it together and put back in the lower part of the dash plugged in. They continue installing new stereo.

I personally did this myself and am very happy with the new stereo system. I installed a kenwood and it is great.

I want to do exactly as you did with my 2005 XC 90. Been all over your tube trying to find a video that fits your description. Can you give me a link to the video? Thanks
