Default XC90 T6 transmission failure

I have a 2005 XC90 T6 (124,000 miles) with a potential transmission problem which could fail anytime. I've read some fail at 30,000 more or less and some on their 2nd, 3rd or 4th transmission. Have done flush and don't ride it hard. Used on weekends and for long trips. I know that having Volvo pay for this widely known problem will probably not even happen even with an act of congress.

So, my questions are...has anyone had theirs replaced with a hd rebuilt from a performance shop? I know these are GM transmissions and I have found several sites that sell beefed up hd transmissions for around $1500 give or take. I was thinking to better invest in a known good transmission rather that fight with Volvo and end up with the same type transmission. Any thoughts, any recommendations (shop, prices, vendors, etc.???) I love my XC90 and I think if not for the transmission problem I could get good use out this for much longer.

I have a 2001 Chrysler Sebring Coupe with 345,000 and 1991 Nissan Maxima with 425,000 miles with no major problems (both hard driven)...just the routine maintenance keeps these two running. My Volvo??? OMG! I feel cheated...

Thanks

I WAS a volvo customer for life....UNTIL my transmission on my '04 CX90 T6 failed. I bought the car new,,,it has new been anywhere BUT a volvo dealer for service. Volvo admits that the transmission in these cars is a faulty transmission....yet they will not take ownership. I bought a Volvo, not a GM. I loved my car too....now I would never get another volvo due to the run around from Volvo of North Amer. and the dealer. So....you are correct...Volvo WILL NOT PAY for this widely known transmission problem...and they have a class action suit against them for this spectific issue. I feel cheated too....

Volvo XC90 Transmission Class Action Litigation

Practice:
Consumer Protection

Phase:
Current

Chimicles & Tikellis has filed a proposed class action lawsuit against Volvo Cars of North America, LLC and Volvo Car Corporation (together, “Volvo”) in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. According to the complaint, Volvo’s SUV XC90 T6 model years 2003 to 2005 are predisposed to transmission slippage, premature clutch wear, overheating, and other problems that ultimately result in serious and expensive damage to the vehicles’ transmission.
The complaint filed by C&T asserts claims for violations of the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act, breach of implied and express warranties, and unjust enrichment. The complaint seeks to represent a nationwide class of current or former owners and/or lessees of the Volvo model XC90 T6, model years 2003 through 2005.

Default has anyone heard back from them?

has anyone sent their info to this class action lawsuit site? I just did and was wondering what to expect.
I actually just bought an 04 xc90 t6 from a one owner and it's transmission is not doing so good. But it's got over 150 miles and it was just rebuilt about a month ago. Going to take it back to the local mechanic that did it since he gave a warranty. I do know that the original transmission was fixed twice by the volvo dealership at about 87000+.
Anyway still sent an email to these guys...

well my xc90 is at 152+ and I'm the second owner. I just bought the damn thing end of September, and the transmission urgent light came on yesterday. Every time I'm at at complete stop it doesn't want to go. I give it gas nice and easy and pray.
I called the guy who just rebuilt it 9/9 and he says he doubts it's anything he did, but that it's electrical. I don't get it.
Anyway not until after I bought the vehicle did I find out that this is actually it's third transmission (which the mechanic verified, which meant the first owner lied to me about) in the car. The first two were done by volvo, this last one buy a local mechanic because the owner was just trying to get it off his hands and didn't want to pay. He at least gave me all the records through email after the purchase so I have all proof he actually took care of the car.
The first tranny went out at 87+ then they had to do it again 2000 mi later cause I guess the dealership messed something up.
Do you think they will offer to help with repairs on another transmission? I just can't afford to pay 6000. The reason I got this car with high mileage was because we thought the 'new' transmission in it would last, come to find out none of them do. Everyone kept telling us yes volvo lasts for life...right.
Now I'm so pissed at myself for getting this car. Now it just sits in my garage while I wait for tuesday to see if I can get a diagnostic done on it.
I am so going back to honda after this.
Please advise.

Angry T6 disappointment

I called Volvo Customer Care three days ago and discussed my situation. Long story short, I was told that they will not cover anything over 100K miles. However, I said that I have record that it was brought in at 96K (before the extended warranty expired) but because they can't pull a code there is nothing they can do. She also told me that there is a recall on the horizon...didn't give me much details. So, I asked if Volvo can kick in something. She said she'll try but guaranteed because of the mileage they won't cover 100%. I just want to know if I can afford my share.

If all else fails, I am going to have the tx rebuilt with beefed up components and see how far it goes then "get rid" of it. There are a few reputable tx rebuild shops on line that guarantee their work approx.$1500-2200. I'l probably buy a rebuilt from these guys and have it installed by a shop. Like EST6 says, have the software upgraded and cooling system flushed or replaced as well. In the mean time, it is still drivable but it grinds at acceleration...don't know how long this is going to last. I am in the process of flushing the tx maybe that could help a bit.

Anybody out there had theirs replaced by with a hd duty rebuilt/ Pls, give us info...

ES6T, thanks for the advice. I'm going to print out what you said and pass it along to the mechanic as nicely as I can.

By the way my husband also found a site that guaranteed transmission for up to 5 yrs. I couldn't believe it. Here is the link. We are going to be giving them a call Tuesday I'm sure.

http://www.rebuiltautotransmissions....nsmission.html

sandog, what was the site you found?

so we called the transmission place and they had a rebuilt transmission available for my 04 xc90 t6. same gm transmission, but with aftermarket parts she said. comes with a 1 yr warranty,3 yr 100000, or 5 yr unlimited warranty. so long as you get a certified mechanic to do the work they will warranty the parts. should the transmission go bad within that time frame they pay up to 50 an hour of labor and ship the parts the mechanic needs to fix transmission.
sounded pretty good, but we decided against it after speaking to the vovlo mechanic (not at dealer) who said we are better off going to volvo dealer because we can get a warranty with them for the first year and that way if it does go bad within that year we can just take it back to dealer for no added cost, where if we took it to him he would have to charge us labor. Also, he said that we should be okay if the transmission doesn't go out within that first year, that it would last.
so I guess tomorrow we are calling volvo dealer...there goes more of our money that we don't have...

Well gang I contacted the attorneys also. My 04 S80 T6 just died on me with no warning. Last week roughly it out of the blue banged coming to a red light. From then all I had was slipping. Up until that point the car ran 100% smooth. Shifted fine at cold start and no issues.

My mechanic dropped the pan this weekend and magnet was FULL of metal flakes piled 1" high also!!!! I was so ticked.

I have read on numerous sites that hundreds of people have had issues with this transmission and with NO warnings at all just bang, busted and out cash.

I never like to get involved with any suits as I feel it's my responsibility to repair my car, however this car has taken me so far in the two years I've owned it for $3,500-5,000 in repairs and now a transmission. It's quite sad as I had thought Volvo had the "run forever" reputation. Turns out they failed when they decided to place a modified GM transmission in our cars.

Sick I tell you, I'm sick.....

Default only 65,000 my transmission and drive shaft are shot

I bought brand new from the Ontario dealer. I have had one problem after another. Most were minor but annoying since my closest dealer is 1 1/2 hrs away and they don't offer authorized repair anywhere but at a Volvo dealership.

Now at just 60,000 miles the transmission and drive shaft have to be replaced to the tune of $5000+. If the dealer does the repairs is $8000 . And Volvo won't help one bit.

Talking to my local mechanic and reading the blogs the Volvo SUV have had a lot of major mechanical problems.

Volvo have problem with the software there is some glitch in it and Volvo dealers know it but they are greedy and dishonest they start wit replacing the fluid and then the transmission to make many on you guys . Only what you need is updating the software for both engine and transmission which is only 50$. I been there twice first they told me what if the engine will stop after update who will pay to fix it they told me no dealer in usa going to do it. I found someone els to do it for 300$ it helped...
