Well I'm happy to see a forum for Volvo S90. Today after I backed out of the parking space, the S90 remained in reverse and the shifting column became floppy. I deduced the shifter cable snapped. I bring this car in regularly to a Volvo dealer for all of its 120k miles. Has anyone had a shifter cable snap or fall off? I'm in Florida year-round. I realize the car is nearly 9 years old, but this event seems odd as I haven't read anyone else having been through this same experience. Any thoughts?

-Can you shift it from park to reverse and such?
-If so, does it make a Clanking sound?
-Mine did that to me i have a 98 S90, and it was a worn out bearing.

The S90 has shifter rods not a cable.
The bushings might have worn out then over time the clip might have fallen off allowing the rod to fall out.

Install new bushings and a new clip and you will be good to go.

shelbylay: No, the handles moves freely. The car remained in reverse until it was forced into neutral, after crawling under the car. No sounds are heard. Thanks for asking!
Tech: Thanks for the correction and the recommendation! I gather from the responses that this is typical.

cheers!

Somewhat typical.
Mosy people complain about how the shifter gets sloppy and we replace the bushings.

Yup, tech hit the nail on the head on that one.
