Here is my custom CAI. So I went to my local AutoZone and picked up a Spectre air filter and one 45 degree 3in pipes, and a 22 degree 3in pipe (shown in Pics). I then went to Home Depot and bought a coupler and went to work. Me and my dad took a few minutes trying out different fittings and locations for the filter and pipes, but we got it to the way it fit best (as shown in the pics). Then I found some thick, double-walled, cardboard and made a template for a custom box. A few test fits later and I got the perfect shape. I then used a High-heat spray paint to protect it and help insulate it. My dad had some old rubber trim and I used that to seal it all up. I also wanted to get some more air into the chamber, so we cut a hole in the front wall next to the windshield water reservoirand, and we also cut a hole in the lower part of thebumber. I used 3in heater hose, which I also found at HomeDepot, for the duct and that is pretty much it. It only took an hours and about 55bucks. Sorry for the bad photos.

Here is the Filter and piping with MAF attached. It is not the staightest path to the turbo but it works

This is the hole in the lower bumper. you should be able to see through it.

Not bad for a custom setup.

That ducting material from the bumper to the intake though could be better with a 3" pipe with the same stuff you used for the intake.

Thanks. I like that the spectre filters are almost the same as the K&N but are half the price.
Awsome to hear about yours, and have fun with it.:)

Edit: if you want, post some pics of yours.

very Nice setup TIPS....I think you gave me an Idea on your setup. Now talking about the straightest route to the turbo, what do U mean about that? Airflow on the bend on the tubing?

Yes. The extra bends from the shiny pipes along with the stock intake hose creates a few extra bends for the air to travel, which has can slightly delay throttle response. BUT since The stock restriction are gone, the air flows better. Aslong as the bends dont have sharp edges, then it wont matter.

Thanks....It is a fun little mod, and it sounds good.

So I have an 85 740 turbo(I don't know how much difference there is) I wanted to do something like this for my car(this thread will be a great help) but it has this little heater pipe that kinda pulls warm air from over the turbo during cold running conditions. I was wondering if your car had something like this, and if it's illegal to remove it?

Yeah that is the preheat hose.
Mine is a 91, which, never came with the hose from factory.

Depending on where you live, It is illegal. What area you in?
If you take of the hose, nothing will happen, and if you remove the part attached the to ehaxust, it looks like your will never had it ;)
I just took mine of the 244, i just need to remove the manifold shield.

Actually, in CAli, I can't legally pass smog with this CAI on. We took it off and put the box back to smog. I am sure I could pass. the guy we see is really cool, about stuff like this.

I live in Northern California(Alameda County) about to move down to Southern California(San Bernadino County) and so far I've delt with a lot of jerks smogging other cars I've had so I figured I'd ask first before going ahead, Thanks!
