My wife has a 2005 XC-90 v-8 with 15,000 miles. About 6 weeks ago the fuel pump (we were told) caused the car to go dead and strand my wife in the middle of nowhere. It was fixed and ran fine until tonight when again it goes dead on me in the middle of the highway. It has always gotten premium gas and my wife loves the car, but I don't think it is safe anymore. I got it intending for my daughter to drive in a couple of years but now I don't trust it. Has anyone else experienced this problem? We are sick about it.

How much time was there between the fix and it going dead?

Ok just checking because sometimes it the sending unit with the pump isn't set 100% properly it will cause the same problem.

Send it back to Volvo and tell them to fix it as it is covered by the warranty. It is probably also under the lemon law.

Already sent it back, they will hear from my wife tommorrow, I pity them. It takes 3 strikes for the lemon law to take effect in MS, but with this catastrophic problem, I don't see Beth driving it again.

I don't think this is a common problem with the XC90s. Might just be that unfortunately, you got a bad one.

It is common on the XC90's. Water gets to the ECM under the drivers side cowl. Causes all the electronics to shut down.

Should still be covered under warranty!

Volvo doesn't know what happened, say that they had a bad "batch" of fuel pumps. How could we drive this car without concern?

When it occured did all the electronic in the car shut off or did the motor just stop?

Electronics OK, fuel pump out per Volvo.

THis is the second time in a month, we are not taking this car back unless we get a solid answer as to why it quit...... 2 bad fuel pumps? Give me a break.

Are you goin to let them drive it till it goes out again!?!? 2 bad pumps could definatly happen, its not impossible! Could be another issue they are just not seeing! The fuel pump could be running at 100% all the time, therefore burning it up. Could be a lot of different things.

If this is common with the XC90s, why doesn't Volvo just save themselves and others the trouble by recalling this model?

I don't think this is a common problem. It always happens after a fill up. The Volvo mechanics are baffled and are trying to replicate the problem by driving it and filling it up. However, we are going to trade for another XC-90.

Good luck. Hope you get an XC90 without problems. In fact, under the capitalist system, they should compensate your for your troubles.

We are currently waiting for Volvo's response. I hope to just trade the car for another XC-90, and the dealer has been reasonable, giving us a loaner car. Will let you know what happens.

I have heard of this happening sporadically though, an exact incident like this happened in OK, (3 times it went dead in a month)- again the fuel pump went out.

Anyone else with this problem on the V-8 XC-90?

Have you had the battery cable to starter connection checked?

We were told there was a software glitch on the early 2005 V-8s that has been corrected.

However, we traded to a 2006 XC-90 and were treated very well by Volvo and our dealer.
