XC90 I知 buying An old one and would like advice please
Hi all, I致e joined the forum as I知 soon going to own an XC90
I looked at a 2004 2.4 diesel yesterday that we really loved but it was painfully slow to get above 30mph about 7 seconds..
is this normal? It felt like there should be a turbo that wouldn稚 kick in.
going to view a 2004 2.9 petrol tomorrow with 155,000 miles on the clock. It痴 got good service history, cam belt and water pump done 5000 miles ago, anything to look out for.

I leased a t-6 for my shop back in 2004, the transmission lasted 22000 miles and was replaced under warranty. After that my shop replaced several on customers cars (the GM trans). It was always fun to remove the trans oil pans - when bad it looked like you were panning for gold with all the metal shavings in the pan. Consequently those shavings would contaminate the 2 trans oil coolers and hoses. Volvo suggested replacement of the radiator, trans oil cooler and hoses at the same time to not void the warranty on the replacement transmission. Transmission replacement became very expensive.
I would not recommend a xc90 t-6 unless the transmission was just replaced.

The 2.9 gas engine is twin turbo with ~270 HP and lots of torque. The problem is the GM (general motors) transmission that Volvo used fails - frequently. That GM trans was used in many GM products, but was not really rated for the torque of that Volvo twin turbo 6.

The xc70 2001-2007 used the aw55-71 transmission. That one is known for problems also but is more reliable than the GM trans used in the early t6. The aw55-71 was/is used in many brands of cars - and has a list of problems. Some easily (cheaply, reasonably) solved, some not. Sometimes if there is a relatively simple valve body problem a shop will sell a new/reman transmission to make sure the problem is fixed (and cover their rear end)
