Default 2008 XC70 Oil Filter Removal

It seems that the oil filter element sits in a small bowl that is accessible from the top of the engine. There is a plastic cover on the bowl with a plastic nut molded into the top of the cover. The plastic nut molding looks like a 36mm. For plastic filter housing cover removal, it seems like it is easist to use a 36mm socket with an extension since there is not much room to work.
QUESTION: once the filter housing cover is off, do I pull the old filter element out of the top of the engine or drop it down below to remover it?
How much oil to put in the bowl once the new filter element is dropped in?
