Default Dash illuminator bulb - 1990 240

1990 Volvo 240DL Wagon

I need to replace one of the dash illuminator bulbs (one of the two that lights-up the clock-speedo-gas/temp gages). It has a reddish-brown base. Does the bulb come apart from the base or do I need to buy the complete unit?

Complete unit only. Hard to find bulb too other than from dealer at $12 a crack. I think FCP Groton stocks them too but they are no cheaper than the dealer and you have to [pay for shipping too...Just go to your local Volvo dealer(actually call first because they might not stock them) and get them there.

240's from 81' to 88' use a removable bulb from the socket or base, but 89' to 93' use halogen bulbs and you can not adapt previous years. You can get them in eEuroparts for $6.90 part no.989809. They have free shipping over $49.

Thanks for the info, y'all.

Unfortunately the local Volvo dealer shut-down last year so looks like I will be internet shopping. That sucks, 'cause shipping charges are more than the cost of a new bulb. I guess I'll wait until I need some other stuff and combine purchases.

volvoguy, i must respectfully disagree. maybe mine had been changed out before I got my car (87 240), but they are brown or black bases, and I just changed both my bulbs. they werent halogen, and they slid right out. in fact I had some old bulbs from my 71 plymouth and they popped right in. work just fine. now, however, my right blinker (with the tiny bulb) isn't blinking anymore.

Talking 89-93 Volvo 240 dash lights

Hey, BTD, read my post about the year application and Pugluvr, you probably will need other parts or maintenance items that can add up to $49 bucks (free shipping), c'mon!
