Volvo 940 stalling problems
VOLVO 940 2.3 SOHC 1994
Was experiencing awhile back surging on the freeway or in town, then my care would just die. I would put it back in park and it was start up fine. Eventually it did it more often until I was unable to start it up at all. When I did start it up the rpm gauge would jump from 1000 - 4000 while the engine was shaking real bad. I let it sit for a month or to until I decided to do the following.
replace:
1. distributor
2. rotor
3. thermostat
4. fuel filter (upon replacing this it look like black water coming out of old filter)
5. air filter.
Upon replacing this, the car drove fine until this morning.
It stalled out 4 times on freeway. I mean the engine completely dies just lights and everything stay on. Then I put in park and start up.
Now the car wont even start. It just tries to crank over with no success?
Mass Air flow sensor???
Any ideas please.

Go to www.stepbystepvolvo.com for free guide to 740/940 no-starts. (Doesn't cover automatics, though, which I have learned adds another layer of possible faults.)

LH is smart enough to figure when the AMM is missing to pull input from other sensors (throttle position, I assume) and a pre-written table iirc, to actually run without an MAF.
I've had similar symptoms until I unplugged my AMM
so try that, unplug your AMM, start the car, and drive it around.
Does it put out smoke when you start it with the AMM plugged in? That's another good sign that something's wrong with the AMM.
