Default Changing the power steering pump reservoir

I'm replacing the power steering pump with a rebuild unit. The rebuilt pump does not include the reservoir so I have to transfer it from the original unit. My Haynes manual states that it requires special tools to transfer the reservoir and they suggest taking it to the dealer. Does anyone have any experience transferring the power steering pump reservoir? Do I really have to take it to the dealer?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

I just replaced the power steering pump on my 2004 Volvo S60 2.4L (Non-turbo) and just disconnected the hose line from the reservoir to the pump.........no reason to also replace the reservoir. I did first use a clean kitchen basting siringe to remove the fluid from the reservoir before I disconnected the hose lines to the pump. By the way, my Volvo Dealer Parts Dept wanted $450 for the OEM rebuilt pump with $100 refund when the core is returned. I found various prices at online for this pump but instead bought it from mylocal Advance Auto Parts Store......paid $219 for it and then got $35 refund with the core return. I also bought there a new rebuilt alternator for the S60 for $269 and then got a $85 refund for the core return. They told me their Limited Life-time Warranty on these parts means if they EVER fail, bring the part back with your receipt and they will give you a new one.........best ever parts warranty I've ever experienced!

Just finished the job and discovered it was very simple to transfer the reservoir from the original power steering pump to the new one. There are 2 clips holding the plastic container to the pump. I had to take the unit to a shop to have the new pulley pressed onto the new pump, other than that, it was simple!

Thanks!
