To relax the tension on the serpentine belt tensioner, you would need a 1/2-to-3/4 adapter. However, the adapter would not fit perfectly and you would have to keep applying pressure to it while you turn the tensioner CCW, because the adapter would keep wanting to slip. I believe the dealer uses a special tool for this. If you can grind down the adapter for a perfect fitment, that would be ideal. For this type of tool modification, cheap tool is a great alternative. I would not do this on a Snap-on tool.

I believe Mathews Volvo Site had a pic of home-made adapter for this; I think someone welded aC25 coinonto an adapter.

I forgot to add one importance. The tensioner can be locked out at the max relaxed position to make the job a lot easier. There is a hole on the movable part of the tensioner, as well as on the backing plate. At the maxed out position, insert something like an Allen key or a drill bit so you do not have to abuse your arms[:@].

I used a nail puller/crowbar that fit diagonally in between, $4-$5 at Lowe's. I bought 4 of them to find one that fit and returned...all of them (don't tell them).

I use adjustable wrench reaching from the bottom side (wheels turned all the way towards passenger side and removing one plastic nut to fold the liner inside) and there is a designed squared area at the end of the tensioner where it fits very securely. My guess is that 17mm or 19mm might do the same job but i never bothered to try it because my adjustable one fits quite comfy.

I used a chair leg and welded a piece of steel and ground it back to fit perfectly diagonally, chair leg gives great leverage.
