ABS and BRAKE LIGHT On

ABS and BRAKE LIGHT On
I'm new to this. This is my first Volvo-first car in fact. I bought my 2000 Volvo s40 about a month and a half ago. It has both the abs and brake light on. The check engine light is in too, but I think it is a result of the other lights. In my state you can't register a car with any lights on (one of the down sides to living in a large city, you have to pass emission ). I don't know why the lights are on. The car drives fine, and the brakes work fine too. But I've narrowed it down: either the fuse to the abs or the abs module, I hear those go bad a lot on these. What do you think it is? How muchshould I expect to pay? Is it hard to repair an abs module? Do you have instructions? Thanks!!!

First thing is stop by a local Autozone and ask them to read the OBD2 codes for you. The likely cause is the ABS controller board which can develop cracks in the solder joints. You can either send the board to a repair shop like Xemodex, Midwest-ABS or Victor Rocha's shop, or you can buy a used part at a yard (search via car-parts.com). The repair shops generally quote $200 which is the best long term solution. I replaced the board on my 2000 S40 with a used one for $65 from a local yard. I also have a spare (not tested) so PM me if interested from when I replaced the ABS valve body. No special pairing is required like on some newer models.

And go to Harbor Freight and get a code reader! They are cheap insurance so you don't have to go back to Autozone or Advance to have them read your codes every time. And it's a tool that can be used for any 1995 and up vehicle. Get the CAN BUS compliant model for full compatibility to newer cars. This tool should last many years. A good investment.
