Odometer stops working and engine, abs, other lights come on
we just bought our first volvo which is an 2000 S70 with 93,000 miles. We recently took it in because check engine lights came on. The mechanic reseet the light and told us that happens when gas cap is not tightned properly.
I forgot to put gas cap and was driving around w/out gas cap and the odometer stopped working and a bunch of lights came on. I bought a cap and replaced it. we took it back to have the lights reset and now they still come on. The odometer stopps working we get a ------on the miles and when you take off from a stop it laggs.
Don't know what this could be. I thougth it was only because of the gas cap. that wouldn't make the car run sluggish?

The ABS module is bad.
You can send it here to be rebuilt.

The site will tell you how to remove it as well.

I've just used the above mentioned site for an ABS module rebuild on a '98 T5. I recommend Victor highly.
Of note is that the car was performing poorly when the TRACS light was on. Rebuilding the module has restored all of the power. Interesting that the car would detune itself when it sensed the brake system malfunction...

RE: Odometer stops working and engine, abs, other lights come on
I have put minimal mileage, less than 150 miles, on my 1998 Volvo S70 with the odometer and speedometer not working. I'm waiting on my ABS module to come back from repair. Will the odometer reset itself to the miles I have put on, and will the check engine light go off by itself, or do I have to go to the dealer to solve these problems?

I don't think the odometer will have had the input for the last 150 miles. It should reset to the previous held value, I would think. I'm interested in knowing. If you used Victor's services, he can probably tell you.
The ABS light resets when you hit about 7 mph and the system does a self-diagnostic. The check engine light wasn't observed when I did the control unit replacement, because we didn't run the car in the interim. What I know of the check engine light on '98 S70's indicates a trip to your friendly dealer.
Of note is that the engine "detunes" itself for less power when an ABS/TRACS issue is sensed. My friend was concerned about his car when the lights were on. He's been smiling since the repair and says the car is easily back to having as much power as before. His regular mechanic didn't know the software would do this and did pretty much a stage 0 tuneup when the power was down. It wasn't lost money, but I'm sure a few of the replaced parts could have gone a lot longer than they did. We learn a lot when we dig into these cars.

It was the ABS fuse that needed to be replaced. The odometer did not record the 150 miles, which is pretty scary, cause I could have probably put on a lot more miles. Once I put the fuse in, the ABS, TRACS, and Check Engine went right away. Now I have no lights(knocking on wood), it is so nice at night.
